Iraqi refugees and Germany
In the whole 16th Legislature the Committee for Foreign Affairs has decided only once on refugee matters, in regard to Iraq and through initiative of the Greens:
antrag der gruenen im bundestag (pdf, 77 KB)

In this it is acknowledged that every month 60.000 Iraqis leave their country! Around one quarter of the Iraqi people is fleeing: 4.4 milion people! But nobody reports this crisis in the mainstream media...

As well the initiative to offer more help to Iraqi refugees has been cruelly refused by the CDU and SPD with the help of the recommendations of other committees which they control through their majority, even if Germany and all other European countries would be in the position to help!
ablehnung des antrags seitens cdu und spd (pdf, 73 KB)

I have asked today on Abgeordnetenwatch.de to the candidate Andreas Steppuhn about this decision of his party and his personal opinion! We need to inform ourselves much more widespread...our everyday media is extremely politically biased!

For further reading of the Green Human Rights Policy, have a look at the following reader, which is outlining the various initiatives undertaken in order to better the human rights involvement of Germany.

Answer of SPD candidate Andreas Steppuhn
In general his answer is quite clear. He indicated that the SPD had already discussed the refugee situation in summer 2007, increased national helps for them and asked for deportation stop for Iraqi people on a national level (I suppose, it has not been accepted, as he indicated difficulties with CDU on national and regional level). They have plead on European level for more help, but there have been huge contrasts between different countries about this issue. As well, their no to the initiative of the Greens in December 2007 was due to the fact of the coalition treaty with the CDU, which forbids to overvote with the opposition parties certain decisions.

I am convinced that there has been certainly done something, but far too less! Should not a real left-wing party take its stands above all on these issues with all its forces? Is it not integral part of your constitution as a left-wing party? Steppuhn indicated that another coalition eg with the Greens would have had quite other results in refugee politics...lets hope that this weekend we will have a change and at least no liberal-catholic coalition!

Closing refugee camps
I just had to think about his answer. Did you read about the closing of the camps close to Calais yesterday?

http://english.aljazeera.net/news/europe/2009/09/2009922101021221464.html

I cannot believe what is going on there! They are closing the camp over night and deporting the people back to Greece because this is the way they entered Europe. But what will the Greek government do about this? There is no plan, no strategy, no nothing. I saw a report on ZDF about these camps about a year ago. These people are living like animals without shelter, food or education for the kids. They deserve help and our governments are failing to provide this help!

Who are the 278 persons arrested in the jungle of Calais?
Nearly the half, exactly 132 of the people arrested were under 18 year olds, youngsters, mainly from Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as exile iranians, who, in search for wellbeing, education and solidarity, spent all their savings and family possessions to reach Calais and then one day Great Britain. But the single European countries fail, when they need to put their words into concrete action. The War in Iraq and Afghanistan was favoured, organized and financed also by us, weapons were sent, sanctions were imposed upon them...but yes when it comes to implement a concrete solidarity with their living people in need, refugees, exiles, above all children (!), ...we have no fear to arrest them in their kind of "Robin Hood" living conditions and say "Return to Start again".

For the Greek government the immigrant situation is already completely out of control...there have been ongoing social unrests, I remember not long ago in Athens. Also Italy with its large coasts is suffering a lot illegal immigration as well, mainly from Africa and Arab states, but also from Bangladesh and Pakistan. Recently, it has adopted some very disgusting anti-immigration measures, using Gheddafi's help and closing immigrant access to health care. The northern countries of Europe, for example France and Germany, do very little to solidarize with their southern neighbours in finding a common solution to this rising problem. In an everglobalizing world, espelling people out of your country, signifies that you have them in the backyard (or buried in the Mediterranean sea)...
